Welcome to the great game of disc golf! Disc golf is a wonderful sport as all you really need is a single disc, but it also provides plenty of opportunity to be a more serious player! From the occasional casual round by yourself or with others to a weekly leagues where you can have some low-stakes competition all the way to tournaments for those that really enjoy competing with others, disc golf has something for everyone.

The Disc Golfer's Code

The first thing you will want to know is the Professional Disc Golf Association's (PDGA) Disc Golfer's Code. The PDGA is the governing body of the sport at the amateur and pro level.

PDGA disc golfer's code: 1 play smart - never throw into a blind area or when players, spectators, pedestrians, or other facility users are within range. Use a spotter. 2 - Respect the course. Observe all posted rules. No littering, graffiti, or abuse of equipment or flora. 3 - Represent the sport. Be positive and responsible. Teach others.

Rules of Disc Golf

Next, you will want to familiarize yourself with the rules of the sport. The PDGA rulebook can be found at the PDGA's website where you can download it to save on your phone. Additionally, the PDGA offers an app that allows for access to the rulebook as well.

Competition Manual

In addition to the rules, if you plan on playing disc golf in a more formal competitive environment, such as leagues or a tournament, you will need to familiarize yourself with the PDGA's competition manual. You will also need to be familiar with this manual if you intend on running a tournament.

This manual lays out how tournaments are supposed to run at different levels, discusses different divisions available, as well as expected player code of conduct. The PDGA Competition Manual can be found at the PDGA's website.
